WHO CARES ABOUT GREEK ART?
17 February - 10 March 2006The exhibition ‘Who cares about Greek art’ comments on the burning issue of redefining identities and aims regarding Greek art and its position in our country.
The variety of artistic media (sculpture, painting, video, performance, photography and installation), and artists’ various ideological approaches, express the new tendencies of contemporary art.
Artists of various cultural backgrounds are participating in the exhibition. The participants are 5 Greek artists (Nikos Arvanitis, Alexandros Zika, Christina Mitrentse, Zoi Pappa, Sokratis Mitsios) and 5 international artists(Dilek Eringen, Bern Roche Farrely, Loisa Mahoney, Tomoya Matzusaki, Emma Torkington).
In the era of globalization and radical development the question WHO CARES ABOUT GREEK ART? is an open field for debate. Is there a contemporary Greek art scene? What are the procedures and mechanisms used for achieving one? What is its position worldwide? What is happening in historic and cultural tradition? To what extent have Greek artists taken advantage of foreign influences?
The artists do not have to give a specific answer. Ηowever, they are asked to participate in a creative debate of political context regarding the Greek art scene and its position and development in our country and abroad.
The artists’ work reconsider, question, and redefine the meaning of cultural diversity by making comparison and through communication. In this way they contribute to the wider cultural understanding and exchange of information.
Through the creative cultural exchange taking place in the exhibition, we aim to cotribute to the investigation and shaping of an artistic vocabulary of Greek and European expression, while presenting an art of international standards.
*“Who cares about Greek art?” is a strictly non-profit exhibition.
